Major Earthquake Strikes Northern Afghanistan: Casualties and Damage

A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has resulted in numerous casualties and significant damage.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck northern Afghanistan, with its epicenter located near Mazar-i-Sharif. Preliminary reports indicate that at least seven people have died and more than 150 have been injured, according to Reuters.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 28 km. Mazar-i-Sharif has a population of around 523,000. Samim Joyanda, spokesperson for the health department in Samangan, stated: "As of this morning, we have confirmed 150 injuries and seven fatalities. The injured have been taken to medical facilities."
The data collected from hospitals indicate that the situation requires urgent response. The USGS Pager impact assessment system issued an orange alert level, indicating the likelihood of significant casualties and extensive destruction. Haji Zaid, spokesperson for Balkh province, also confirmed that during the earthquake part of the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif collapsed.
