Kyiv has officially received the title of UNESCO City of Music, marking its ambition to be a significant cultural hub. As noted by Kyiv City Council member Victoria Mukha, this achievement is the result of a sustained effort that lasted over a year.

“We submitted our application during a challenging time, yet we believed that our city deserved recognition in the global cultural arena. This UNESCO designation acknowledges not only our rich musical heritage but also the contemporary creativity that unites people,” emphasized Victoria Mukha. “This is not just an honorary title; it’s an opportunity to advance cultural initiatives and support young talents.”

The idea to apply emerged in 2023 as part of the Kyiv City Council's efforts. The project was supported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. An intersectoral team was formed to develop the application, involving representatives from various sectors.

During the preparation phase, a comprehensive analysis of Kyiv's cultural life was conducted, confirming the significance of the music sector for the city. Kyiv boasts numerous concert venues, music schools, and hosts various festivals and cultural events.

Throughout the year, a team of specialists worked on a strategy for developing the music sector, formulating projects at both local and international levels.

“Achieving the status of UNESCO City of Music is a result of deep collaboration among city specialists, the music community, and municipal authorities,” stated Serhiy Anzhiyak, director of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration. “This marks a new chapter in Kyiv’s cultural development, opening up opportunities for international cooperation and investment in cultural infrastructure.”

Initiatives related to the City of Music status will be integrated into the city program “Capital Culture: 2025-2027,” which aims to systematically develop Kyiv’s cultural ecosystem.

A coordination office will be established at the Kyiv Municipal Academy of Music to oversee the implementation of the strategic action plan as part of Kyiv’s participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
