On the morning of October 20th, many major applications and websites faced significant disruptions. According to Independent, affected apps included Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva.
The issues began around 10 AM Kyiv time, which corresponds to midnight Pacific Time.
These outages are likely linked to a malfunction in Amazon Web Services (AWS), which underpins a large portion of modern internet infrastructure.
The company has already acknowledged an «increase in error rates» and delays across «several AWS services».
Amazon Web Services provides a variety of internet infrastructure services that allow businesses to rent servers and computing power for their applications and websites.
As a result, any issues in AWS can quickly impact a significant part of the internet, affecting websites that may not have any obvious ties to Amazon.
AWS is currently the leading provider of such cloud services globally.
Last year, the company generated $108 billion, accounting for a major portion of Amazon's profits.
Amazon Web Services stated that they are still investigating the cause of the issues.
«Engineers have been promptly engaged and are actively working to resolve the problem as well as to fully understand its root cause», – reads the company's latest update.
