A dramatic incident unfolded in central Paris at the world-renowned Louvre Museum. According to BBC, the heist took place on Sunday, October 19. Law enforcement is currently on-site.
The French culture minister confirmed that there were no injuries.
“I am here with museum staff and police. An investigation is underway,” he stated.
As reported by Le Parisien, the thieves managed to escape with valuable items. Initial findings suggest that hooded robbers gained access to the building, which is undergoing renovations. They used a freight elevator to reach the room in the «Apollo» gallery.
After breaking a window, two men entered the building while a third waited outside. They stole nine pieces from the collection of jewelry belonging to Napoleon and the Empress, including a necklace, brooch, tiara, and more.
According to sources at the Louvre, the famous «Regent» diamond, weighing over 140 carats, was not taken. The assessment of the damages is still pending.
