In the Netherlands, during the night of October 8, police detained a group of pro-Palestinian activists who occupied a building at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Gelderland province. According to NOS, 23 individuals were arrested.
"The occupation of one of the Radboud University buildings in Nijmegen concluded last night. Pro-Palestinian activists had been holding a laboratory located on the campus since yesterday. The police report that a total of 23 demonstrators have been detained. All of them are currently in custody," the statement reads.
The protest was aimed against the potential partnership between the university and an Israeli institution. The activists demanded a complete severance of academic ties with Israel and initially planned to remain in the building until the administration made concessions.
Radboud University condemned the occupation, stating that the protesters had "crossed a line," as on October 7, pro-Palestinian activists had occupied one of the university's buildings, taking over a laboratory containing hazardous materials.
University representatives and the mayor of Nijmegen described the protesters' actions as dangerous. The occupied building housed superconducting magnets and cooling gases, which could potentially cause an explosion if damaged. Emergency services, including police, fire brigade, ambulance, and bomb disposal units, promptly arrived at the scene, the publication reports. All detainees remain in custody.
