The Belgian Ministry of Defense is currently investigating after 15 drones were spotted over the Elsenborn military base near the German border on Thursday evening. This was reported by Politico.
As of Friday, the Ministry stated it is unclear where the drones originated from and who was controlling them, but reports indicate they flew to Germany after passing over the base.
This incident in Belgium comes amid a surge of drone-related disruptions in European airspace.
It is worth noting that in Germany, an airport in Munich, one of Europe's largest air hubs, was closed on Friday night due to unidentified drones, resulting in the cancellation of 17 flights and travel disruptions for nearly 3,000 passengers.
Additionally, 15 flights scheduled to arrive in Munich that night were redirected to airports in Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt.
The German air traffic control agency (DFS) restricted flights at Munich airport from 10:18 PM local time on Thursday and later completely halted them due to the presence of drones in the airspace near the airport.
The Munich airport incident followed a series of air traffic closures in Denmark last week due to suspicious drone activity near several airports.
Danish authorities have yet to release findings regarding the ownership of the intruding drones, but Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suggested that Russia may be behind the disruptions at Danish airports.
European Union leaders on Wednesday supported plans to strengthen the block’s defenses against Russian drones, despite Moscow's denial of involvement in the incidents.
Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary believes that if unidentified drones are violating the airspace of EU countries and causing disruptions at airports, they should be shot down.
