During a recent high-level international conference at the UN on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue, several European countries including Luxembourg, Malta, and Belgium officially recognized the State of Palestine.
This was reported by Reuters.
Over the past weekend, Canada, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Australia also announced their recognition of Palestine.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the conference via video call, as he was unable to attend due to a US visa denial, urging for the recognition of the Palestinian state.
"We call on those who have not yet done so to follow this example," he stated, promising to implement reforms and hold elections within a year after a ceasefire.
Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, expressed the official recognition of the Palestinian state.
"Rarely has the prospect of a two-state solution seemed so distant as today. Yet, never has international will to achieve it been so united. When doubts arise, we must meet them with confidence and hope. Therefore, I solemnly declare that Luxembourg officially recognizes the State of Palestine," he said.
Malta and Belgium also acknowledged the Palestinian state. Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela mentioned that the two-state solution is the "worst possible outcome" for Hamas.
"I am also aware of the opinion that recognizing the State of Palestine somehow equates to a victory for Hamas. However, the two-state solution is the worst possible outcome for them. It is not what they wish to see. They want Israel wiped off the map," he said.
Belgium's Prime Minister Bart De Wever confirmed on Monday that Belgium joins the ranks of nations recognizing the State of Palestine.
"Belgium today sends a strong political and diplomatic signal to the world by joining the group of countries declaring recognition of the State of Palestine," said De Wever.
He added that Brussels will proceed with legal recognition of Palestine after the release of all hostages and the removal of all terrorist organizations like Hamas from governing Palestine.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country officially recognizes the State of Palestine to break the cycle of violence, free Hamas hostages, and halt Israeli operations in Gaza, paving the way for peaceful resolution.
