The Kyiv City Council has addressed the Verkhovna Rada and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, urging them to ensure fair compensation for educational and scientific-pedagogical staff. This appeal was supported by deputies during a plenary session on October 31.
As noted by Kyiv City Council member and deputy chair of the education and science committee, Boris Siklytsky, this appeal emphasizes the risks posed by low salaries and high dangers, particularly during martial law, which could lead to the loss of qualified educators, negatively impacting the quality of education.
«Educators play a crucial role in not just teaching, but also in shaping the worldview of new generations, often having an influence equal to that of parents. Now, when schools and universities have become safe spaces for support and learning, it is vital that teachers' work is properly valued. This will help retain staff in the education system and uphold a proper standard of learning. We insist on raising the starting salary for first-tier staff to 3,600 UAH, as stipulated in the state budget for 2024, and propose revising the bonus system, establishing it at 30% of the salary for educators across various levels. Additionally, deputies request that the resolution on the pay of scientific-pedagogical staff remains in effect to avoid further staffing shortages in education», stated Boris Siklytsky.
The deputy added that systemic changes are needed at the state level to ensure a stable salary level in line with the country's economic growth.
