Starting October 12, 2025, Ukrainians will experience changes in the regulations for crossing the European Union's borders with the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES). This system, as explained by the Department of Consular Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, is an automated database that will monitor all entries and exits of third-country nationals, including Ukrainians.
The system applies to short trips of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Instead of traditional passport stamps, there will now be digital registration.
The following data will be collected:
- facial image
- four fingerprints (for individuals over 12 years old)
- data from the foreign passport
- date, place of entry/exit, and instances of entry denial
How it will work:
- All passengers must exit vehicles for biometric processing;
- The procedure for train travel may vary depending on the border crossing point;
- Refusal to provide biometric data is a legal ground for entry denial.
Why is this being implemented?
- To enhance control over compliance with EU stay regulations;
- To prevent the use of counterfeit documents;
- To improve security in Schengen Area countries.
