On September 1, a new academic year began for 3.5 million Ukrainian children.

Of these, nearly 2.3 million will receive in-person education. The number of those studying remotely has decreased by 103,000 over the year, reported Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

Serhiy Babak, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, noted that 10% of Ukrainian schoolchildren are learning remotely or through other forms of education, as they are abroad (almost 303,000 individuals) or in temporarily occupied territories (over 35,000 students).

According to him, this year about 12,000 schools will operate in Ukraine. Of these, more than 8,000 will teach children in person, 2,500 in a mixed format, and another 1,500 remotely.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadiya Kuzmychova mentioned that the vast majority of children learning remotely continue to be students of schools in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions.

Additionally, 56 relocated schools are currently operating in Ukraine, reported Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi.

"Today, four relocated schools from Donetsk are opening their doors for children in new cities. Overall, 56 relocated schools across the country mean that children remain within their school community," wrote the head of the ministry.

Yulia Svyrydenko also shared that by the end of 2026, 203 new shelters in schools are planned to be opened in Ukraine.

Earlier, Nadiya Kuzmychova reported that 221 underground schools are currently being built in Ukraine. 33 of them will open on September 1, and by the end of the year, another 156 objects are expected to be completed, allowing more than 100,000 children to return to their desks.
