OpenAI is looking to build a large new data processing center in India, which could represent a significant advancement for the startup in Asia, promoting its artificial intelligence infrastructure under the Stargate brand.
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing informed sources.
The developer of the popular chatbot ChatGPT is currently seeking local partners for the construction of a data center with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt in the world's most populous country.
This facility could be one of the largest in India, where tech giants like Microsoft and Google, owned by Alphabet, as well as Asia's richest person, have also invested in similar projects.
The exact location and timeline for OpenAI's potential project remain unclear.
According to sources, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman may announce the construction during his visit to the South Asian country this month, although these plans are not yet finalized.
Representatives from OpenAI declined to comment.
OpenAI is coordinating with the U.S. government on the "OpenAI for Countries" initiative, aimed at building artificial intelligence infrastructure aligned with democratic values.
