On August 29, Ukraine observes an important Memorial Day for heroes who lost their lives defending the nation's independence and sovereignty.

This day was established by a presidential decree to commemorate the military personnel and volunteers who sacrificed their lives for their homeland.

It is significant that Memorial Day is celebrated on August 29, as it marks the date in 2014 during the Ilovaisk operation when Ukrainian forces made a courageous breakthrough from encirclement, displaying extraordinary heroism.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized that the memory of the fallen defenders is a duty for all of us to remain strong in defending our homeland.

He noted that since 2014, Russian aggression has continued to claim the lives of our compatriots, and each loss is a profound sorrow for families and comrades.

Syrskyi stressed that the sacrifices of Ukrainian soldiers are not in vain. They form the foundation of our nation's freedom and independence. The memory of heroes reminds us of the cost of this freedom and obliges us to be resilient in the fight for Ukraine.

Today, we honor those who gave everything for our freedom. Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal also expressed gratitude to the defenders of Ukraine who stopped the enemy from the very first days of aggression.

The symbol of this day is the sunflower, which grew on the battlefields near Ilovaisk, where our soldiers fought for the homeland.

Thanks to their sacrifices, Ukraine continues to thrive. We fight for our victory and independence. We remember. We fight. We will prevail!
