Currently, European countries are producing six times more ammunition than two years ago, yet there’s a need for increased manufacturing pace to ensure security.

This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during the opening of the new Rheinmetall artillery shell manufacturing plant in Unterlüß, Germany.

«European production of artillery ammunition has reached 2 million shells per year, thanks in part to Rheinmetall», – Rutte noted.

He also emphasized the need to ramp up production of tanks, air defense systems, and missiles.

«I urge Rheinmetall and others to maintain high production levels and seek collaboration opportunities with partners like Ukraine», – he added.

The Unterlüß plant aims to produce 350,000 artillery shells annually, while global Rheinmetall capacities are expected to reach 700,000.

Rutte highlighted that NATO must strengthen its defense industry as Russia and China continue to enhance their military capabilities.

«We need to adapt to new challenges and accelerate production rates», – he stated.

It is also crucial to reduce dependence on imported raw materials and control costs to replenish arsenals.

The Secretary General noted that the defense industry has become vital for maintaining stability in Europe.

He praised the speed of the new plant's construction, which took only 14 months.

«This is necessary for the security of economies and societies across Europe, especially in the face of aggressive challenges from Russia and China», – he added.

Rutte also mentioned that Russia plans to produce at least 1,500 tanks and 3,000 armored vehicles this year.

«They are preparing for long-term competition with us», – he concluded.

The Secretary General commended Germany for its efforts to increase defense spending, noting that the country plans to invest 153 billion by 2029.

Today, Rheinmetall inaugurated its largest ammunition manufacturing plant in Germany.
