Mass protests broke out in the Swiss city of Lausanne on the evening of August 26, sparked by a tragic incident involving a teenager. Around two hundred youths took to the streets, engaging in brawls and vandalism, erecting and setting fire to barricades.
This has been reported by BILD.
Rioters hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at police officers. Trash bins were set ablaze, and a city bus sustained significant damage. In response, law enforcement had to deploy water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. A total of seven individuals were arrested, and the unrest was only quelled after midnight.
The British publication The Spectator described the events as the most severe riots Switzerland has seen in decades. Masked youths, predominantly of African descent, took to the streets, igniting trash, vandalizing buses, and clashing with police, tarnishing Switzerland's image as a stable and peaceful nation.
The protests were triggered by the death of 17-year-old Marvin M. According to Swiss media, on August 24, the boy was speeding on a scooter, which was reportedly stolen. When police attempted to stop him, Marvin accelerated instead, but soon lost control and crashed into a wall. He succumbed to his injuries.
The initial riots and assaults against police began on the night of August 25. The anger of young protesters was fueled by a recent similar tragic incident, where a 14-year-old girl also lost her life while trying to escape the police on a motorcycle.
“We want to know the truth about these accidents,” stated one of the protesters to journalists.
