The South Korean firm Samsung Electronics will soon start manufacturing next-generation chips for Apple at its Texas facility in the United States.
This news was reported by Yonhap.
Apple confirmed that it is partnering with Samsung at its semiconductor plant in Austin to develop an innovative chip manufacturing technology that is being implemented for the first time in the world.
“By introducing this technology initially in the U.S., this facility will supply chips that enhance the performance and efficiency of Apple products, including iPhones distributed globally,” the iPhone maker added.
Industry experts believe that the chip will likely be a CMOS image sensor intended for the next-generation iPhone.
Previously, Apple sourced all its image sensors from Japan's Sony Group Corp., which, according to market data, held over half of the market share last year.
Samsung Electronics was the second-largest player with a 15.4% share of the global market.
Samsung has declined to confirm the details.
