An F-35 fighter jet belonging to the US Navy crashed in central California on Wednesday near the Naval Air Station "Lemoore".

This information comes from CNN citing a statement from the Navy.

The report indicates that the pilot successfully ejected, and an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.

Video footage from KFSN captured flames and thick black smoke rising from the crash site, located about 64 kilometers southwest of Fresno.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff, local emergency crews arrived at the scene to assist the pilot, and California's fire department also responded.

The Navy stated that the aircraft was part of the VF-125 strike fighter squadron, known as the Rough Raiders, which is responsible for training pilots and crews.

The downed F-35C was one of three variants of the F-35 Lightning II designed for use on US aircraft carriers, while the US Air Force operates the F-35A and the Marine Corps uses the F-35B, which is capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings.

The fifth-generation F-35 fighter is considered one of the most advanced combat aircraft in the world due to its radar stealth and combat capabilities. The aircraft is produced by American company Lockheed Martin with participation from over 17 countries, CNN reports.
