On Wednesday, July 30, Zhitniy Market in the Podil district was added to the list of "recently discovered cultural heritage sites in Kyiv." The order was signed by Marina Solovyova, the head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration.

This was reported on the KCSA website.

Solovyova emphasized that this decision was made possible due to the efforts of activists, city heritage protectors, the professional team of the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection, and the Advisory Council on Cultural Heritage Protection.

From now on, the provisions of the Law of Ukraine "On the Protection of Cultural Heritage" and the protective measures defined by legislation will apply to Zhitniy Market.

Saving Zhitniy Market

In 2025, Zhitniy Market will celebrate its 45th anniversary, and throughout this time, there have been numerous proposals for its demolition or reconstruction. In January of this year, a draft decision was registered in the Kyiv City Council regarding the sale of Zhitniy Market.

According to Gennadiy Kryvoshey, the head of the Public Council at the KCSA, the management of the market has driven it to a loss over the past 15 years, and now, during martial law, they plan to sell it at a reduced price. This historical site requires major repairs, after which it could generate profit for the city.

For the past year, two parties have been fighting for the fate of Zhitniy Market - restaurateur Yevhen Klopotenko and the investment company Inzhur.

As reported by the publication "Khmarochos", Yevhen proposes granting the market the status of an architectural heritage site to protect it from demolition. Following this, a public organization would be created, involving experts and activists with the necessary experience and desire to restore Zhitniy.

Yevhen suggested conducting repairs in stages, without closing the building for an extended time, while using the premises for their intended purpose during the renovation.

The company Inzhur invested over 100 thousand euros of its own funds, reaching out to the international consulting firm Colliers, which helped formulate the revitalization concept and business model for the market. According to Inzhur's project, the external appearance of the building will be preserved, but modern and energy-efficient materials will be used in the renovation.
