On Tuesday, over 1300 firefighters, supported by a fleet of aircraft, battled three large forest fires in central and northern Portugal.
This was reported by Reuters.
In the Aroca area, where the largest fire has been raging since Monday, the civil protection service evacuated dozens of villagers from their homes and closed the tourist site – the Passadicos do Paiva trails. Additionally, since Saturday, a forest fire has been active in the Peneda-Gerês National Park near the Spanish border, enveloping nearby villages in thick smoke. Spain has dispatched several aircraft to assist in controlling the flames in this region. Portuguese authorities declared a 'red alert' for fire danger across much of the country after several weeks of hot weather. Hot and dry summers are typical for the Mediterranean region, but in recent years, intensified heatwaves, driven by global warming, have led to devastating forest fires.
