Since the beginning of 2025, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has developed and approved 110 new patches for units of the Armed Forces.

According to Ukrinform, this information was released by the Ministry of Defense.

The Ministry is actively working on creating military insignia, which in the context of the ongoing war serves not only as a means of unit identification but also as a vital factor in fostering military culture and boosting morale.

This initiative is coordinated by the Department of Military Symbolism and Heraldry of the Central Material Supply Development Office (CMSDO).

«In our department, the main elements of military unit symbolism are created – their patches. These are modern and unique representations of the Ukrainian military, combining historical traditions, regional characteristics, and the specific tasks of the units», stated Colonel Maksym Kayiola, head of CMSDO.

Military units, military management bodies, educational institutions, and organizations within the Ministry of Defense have the right to create their own patches.

The Ministry noted that both modern and traditional elements are used in the design of patches. They must adhere to a unified artistic style, consider historical traditions and the legacy of the Ukrainian military, relate to the locality of the military formation, and other essential factors. Additionally, a common color palette characteristic of the respective type of troops must be used.

A team of professional historians and artists works on the insignia of military units.

The sketch of the patch, agreed upon with the military unit, undergoes evaluation by an expert council composed of leading historians, artists, and technologists from Ukraine.

Only after this, the military unit's patch is approved by the Minister of Defense or the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, depending on the hierarchy. From January to June 2025, 110 patches passed evaluation and were approved.

Examples of the patches showcase deep conceptuality and symbolic significance.

In particular, the patch of the 153rd Separate Mechanized Brigade reflects symbolism through a retrospective of chronicle mentions in the «Tale of Bygone Years», describing the legendary campaign of Kyiv Prince Oleg the Wise to Constantinople.

The insignia of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Anna of Kyiv incorporates both its honorary title and the characteristics of its formation on French lands.

The symbolism of the 19th Army Corps, formed on the former territories of the Black Sea Cossack Army, features symbols from their first flag, which, according to memories, was preserved during the destruction of the Sich.

The Ministry of Defense emphasized that in the current conditions of full-scale war, military insignia has become an integral part of the information, ideological, and moral defense of the state.
