On July 4, Ukraine was elected to the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome.
This was announced by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga on social media.
«This is another significant achievement for Ukraine within the UN system. This morning in Rome, Ukraine was elected to the FAO Council,» wrote Sybiga.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy thanked the member states of the UN for recognizing Ukraine's vital role as a guarantor of global food security and assured that every effort would be made to promote global food security.
«Despite the challenges posed by Russia's full-scale aggression, we will continue to expand our life-saving humanitarian efforts, including through President Zelensky's initiative 'Grain from Ukraine.'», he noted.
He also pointed out that Russia and Belarus were unable to enter the Council, «despite their efforts.»
«Moscow must remain in international isolation. The aggressor and its accomplice have no place in the governing bodies of international organizations,» emphasized the Foreign Minister.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, at the IV International Conference on Financing for Development, urged attending states and organizations to support Ukraine's efforts and work together to address the food crisis caused by Russian aggression.
The FAO Council is one of the main bodies of this organization responsible for global food and agriculture issues. It consists of 49 member countries elected by the FAO conference. The Council performs certain functions delegated to it by the conference and appoints officials, except for the chairperson.
