Today, on June 13, the Council of Ministers of the European Union is meeting in Luxembourg, where they made a political decision to extend the Directive on Temporary Protection for Ukrainian citizens until March 4, 2027.

This was reported by "European Truth" citing the press service of the EU Council.

Temporary protection for Ukrainians will last until 2027

According to the political decision made, temporary protection for Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression will be extended until March 4, 2027. After this mechanism expires, Ukrainian citizens will have the option to either remain in the host country with a new legal status or return home to Ukraine without obstacles.

At the same time, it is noted that the final decision on the extension of temporary protection must be formally approved within the next few weeks.

This delay is related to the need to coordinate technical details, such as translating the document into all official EU languages, the EU Council informed reporters.

The recommendations from the EU Council to member states regarding further actions after 2027 will also be approved with some delay due to the need to resolve technical issues.

Ukraine insisted on extending temporary protection until the end of the war

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity Oleksiy Chernyshov stated that Ukraine calls for the continuation of temporary protection status for its citizens in EU countries until the end of hostilities.

Previously, the European Union plans to decide on the future status of Ukrainian refugees at the EU Council meeting in June 2025.

Currently, the Directive on Temporary Protection, introduced in March 2022 in response to the full-scale invasion by Russia, is in effect for Ukrainians.

This directive guarantees the right to residence, employment, housing, medical and social assistance, as well as education for children. Its validity has been extended until March 4, 2026.
