Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected as the new president of the UN General Assembly for a one-year term.
Current Assembly President Philemon Yang announced this, as reported by the German publication Spiegel.
Annalena Baerbock Leads the UN General Assembly
It was noted that during a secret ballot, 167 UN member states supported Baerbock's candidacy. She was the sole candidate for this prestigious position.
However, due to the initiative of one of the organization's members, the voting took place in secret rather than by acclamation, which is common when there is only one candidate.
According to diplomatic sources from Spiegel, the initiative for the secret ballot was initiated by the Russian Federation, which openly opposed Baerbock's candidacy, accusing her of bias.
As the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Baerbock has repeatedly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine. She has consistently called for a tough policy towards the Kremlin, which has provoked sharp negative reactions from Russian authorities.
Annalena Baerbock Runs for the Position of UN General Assembly President
Previously, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed her intention to run for the position of UN General Assembly President.
She noted that this decision was made in line with many of her predecessors, who were also former foreign ministers or prime ministers.
In January, Annalena Baerbock criticized the German government for its indecisiveness regarding assistance to Ukraine.
Baerbock pointed out that Germany is losing the opportunity to lead in establishing peace in Europe, which deeply concerns her. She believes that some politicians are focused on domestic issues and upcoming elections instead of taking responsibility for peace and freedom in Europe.
