Maritime Conflicts of 2024: Challenges and Triumphs
Why are maritime events crucial for Ukraine and the global community? This question was discussed during the launch of the book «Chronicle of Maritime Operations 2024», the third volume of a series covering naval conflicts amid war. The authors presented daily analytical results, including a timeline of combat actions and strategic insights.
Unceasing Warfare
The moderator of the event, military expert Oleksandr Chudnovets, emphasized that the book's primary goal is not merely to document events but to understand them within the broader context of war.
«We have three volumes covering 2022, 2023, and now 2024. Each volume is based on a daily chronicle, but we do not just record facts; we analyze them in a wider context. That is the mission of the “Chronicle”».
He highlighted that the work involves studying both Ukrainian and Russian sources:
«We utilize all available sources, including Russian ones, to gain a complete picture. This is part of our analysis».
Aviation and Sea: Two Fronts of Change
Co-editor Georgiy Snigir noted that 2024 was marked by significant developments in maritime warfare.
«One of the main narratives of the year was Russia's loss of complete control over the Black Sea. The enemy lost several major ships, altering the balance. More importantly, we managed to reopen export corridors previously blockaded».
Snigir also emphasized the significance of naval drones in the new military strategy:
«These are no longer just technical innovations; they are a distinct combat system that requires a specific approach, changing the rules of engagement. That is why we dedicated a separate section to this topic».
Who is Behind the Project?
Alla Istomina, director of the publishing house «ADEF-Ukraine», highlighted her team's support for the initiative despite risks:
«We understood that this book is not for profit but for remembrance. We knew it had to be made».
She also stressed the importance of the publication for the international audience:
«We have received translation requests; foreign researchers and military personnel want to access this primary source of information».
An Army of Future Historians
Colonel Andriy Bulavin, a military historian, concluded with the significance of documenting events:
«We must preserve our truth for future generations, and the “Chronicle” is our act of resistance».
He emphasized the need to pass knowledge to the next generations:
«In ten years, our children must know what happened on June 1, 2024, and we have already preserved that knowledge».
