At the forum held in the capital, representatives of diplomatic missions and European organizations emphasized the importance of local communities in maintaining Ukraine's resilience during the war.
A moment of silence was held to honor the soldiers who died for the freedom of Ukraine and Europe. This event gathered nearly 400 participants, including local government officials, parliament members, and international organizations.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reminded everyone that December 7 is celebrated as Local Self-Government Day in Ukraine, initiated by the Association of Ukrainian Cities back in 2000. This holiday symbolizes democracy.
Klitschko also announced the joining of three new communities to the Association, which now comprises 1,080 communities, representing 95% of the country’s population.
This municipal forum has become an important platform for discussing the challenges faced by local authorities and devising joint solutions for overcoming them.
The mayor also highlighted the need to protect local governance and the independence of communities.
“Local governance is the foundation of democratic development, and we need its strength for our future,” he emphasized.
Among the achievements of the past year, Klitschko noted the adoption of a law that aligns with European standards of local governance, which has led to an increase in financial aid from European partners to 560 million euros.
The main tasks of the forum include determining ways to ensure adequate funding for municipalities, fostering business development in communities, and improving conditions for internally displaced persons.
“Our primary goal is to support our defenders and their families, and we will continue to do so regardless of the decisions made by other authorities. Together we can achieve anything!” — concluded Klitschko.
