In the three years since the full-scale invasion, over 200,000 Ukrainians have sought refuge in Spain. This figure stands among the highest in the EU. Arriving in a new country, Ukrainians bring with them their vibrant and diverse culture.
Exhibition «Cultural Touches: Spain and Ukraine» in Valencia
On February 25, 2025, the National Museum of Ceramics and Arts González Martí in Valencia hosted the exhibition «Cultural Touches: Spain and Ukraine». The goal of the exhibition is to familiarize the two nations with each other's cultural traditions and to showcase their common heritage. The exhibition is curated by renowned Ukrainian interior designer Kateryna Churina and photographer and set designer Iryna Cheremysina.
«Due to the war, we were forced to move to Spain. As we began to explore this country, we noticed how similar the habits and lifestyles of Spaniards and Ukrainians are. Cultural elements naturally manifest in everyday life. This observation inspired the idea for the exhibition, which demonstrates the harmonious coexistence of Spanish and Ukrainian cultures,» — stated Kateryna Churina.
The exhibition features a series of stylized photographs illustrating traditional household items from Ukraine and Spain. These items accompany people during various moments of life: family celebrations, daily activities, and times of joy and sorrow.
«The photos we took are inspired by classic still lifes and reveal the daily life of both countries. Through our work, we want to introduce Spaniards to Ukrainian culture and inspire Ukrainians to explore Spanish traditions. Our project is also a way to express gratitude to the Spanish people for their warm welcome,» — shared photographer Iryna Cheremysina.
In addition to photographs, the exhibition showcases over 60 items from family collections provided by Ukrainian families. Among them are traditional Ukrainian embroidered aprons and towels from the mid-20th century, Kosiv painted ceramics, and Petrykivka painted pottery, which are recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage.
Also featured are traditional Spanish household items — an antique iron, a botijo jug, a copper bed warmer, sheep shears, and other authentic objects. Each item is accompanied by stories from its owners, discussing the significance of these objects in everyday life, as well as testimonies of war, emigration, and family traditions.
The exhibition «Cultural Touches: Spain and Ukraine» will be open in Valencia from February 25 to June 29, 2025. Venue: National Museum of Ceramics and Arts González Martí. Curator of the exhibition — Svitlana Davidenko.
