On the occasion of Railway Workers' Day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky extended heartfelt congratulations to all employees of Ukrzaliznytsia, recognizing their dedication. He awarded the «For Merit» III class orders and conferred the title of «Honored Transport Worker of Ukraine».
«Despite all the challenges, the Ukrainian railway continues to operate, facilitating passenger and cargo transport. Since the start of the year, Ukrzaliznytsia has transported over 135 million tons of freight, and more than 90 % of passenger trains arrive on time, even in emergency conditions,» the President emphasized.
Volodymyr Zelensky also highlighted the humanitarian missions of Ukrzaliznytsia, including over 3650 medical train trips to assist Ukrainian defenders and evacuate people from conflict zones. Additionally, railway workers facilitated more than 1100 trips for foreign leaders to Ukraine.
The President assured that the government intends to raise salaries and implement new support programs for Ukrzaliznytsia.
«The railway is a vital line of defense for our country. It is constantly under threat, yet it fulfills its mission. Sadly, we have lost 948 railway workers, 753 of whom lost their lives fighting for Ukraine's freedom,» he added.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of the fallen.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, Presidential Advisor Oleksandr Kamyshin, and Chairman of Ukrzaliznytsia Oleksandr Pertsovskiy presented a new sleeper car and the first barrier-free car designed for people with disabilities. Currently, Ukrzaliznytsia has 52 adapted cars for wheelchair passengers.
Furthermore, the President was shown an art car that captures the bravery of the Ukrainian people.
Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with the staff of the Food Train, which provides meals to residents of cities affected by Russian shelling.
