The Ukrainian Parliament has designated July 28 as the Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the defenders of Ukraine, volunteers, and civilians who have been executed, tortured, or died in captivity.
This resolution №10188 was passed on July 22, as reported by the association of families known as "Community of Olenivka".
"We thank everyone involved for their support, as the draft resolution has been under consideration since autumn 2023 and we finally have a significant outcome.
This year, on the third anniversary of the mass execution in Olenivka, we will be able to honor the memory of all those killed in captivity on a national level," – stated the organization.
The adoption of this resolution also garnered a response from the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine “Azov”.
"On the night of July 28-29, 2022, Russia carried out a mass murder of captured defenders from Mariupol in Olenivka. Now, this day will become our symbol of remembrance for those who lost their lives in Russian captivity; for those who are currently still in captivity," – the unit wrote on social media.
According to the bill, the Cabinet of Ministers is to develop and approve an action plan to appropriately honor the memory of the fallen at the state level.
Local authorities are also recommended to prepare and conduct corresponding events in their communities.
