The Ukrainian Security Service and Kyiv police have apprehended three individuals suspected of orchestrating a terrorist attack in the Darnytsia district of the capital. This was reported by the communications department of Kyiv police.
"...Law enforcement has determined that three men, aged 23, 25, and 27, who came to the capital for work, are involved in the attack," the statement said.
The police and SBU, with support from the special unit KORD, detained the suspects in a rented apartment in the city and seized evidence indicating their involvement in the crime.
According to the head of the capital's police, Dmytro Shumeyko, one of the suspects received a "task" via messaging from a so-called curator in Russia to carry out the attack for a reward.
"The perpetrators created homemade explosive devices and disguised them in trash along the patrolling route, as well as placed mobile phones nearby to stream video in real-time. When the National Guard patrol approached the trap set by the criminals, an explosion occurred, resulting in one of them dying and another being injured. A security guard at a nearby construction site was also injured. While police and medics were arriving at the scene, a second explosion occurred, injuring two patrol officers. They are currently in the hospital," Shumeyko said.
The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the SBU under part 3 of article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning a terrorist act that resulted in loss of life. The sanctions for this article include life imprisonment. The Kyiv city prosecutor's office is overseeing the proceedings.
On December 11, two explosions occurred in the Darnytsia district, resulting in the death of a National Guard member and injuries to four individuals.
