In July, a NABU employee, part of the secret unit 'D-2', was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) as part of a large espionage network. Three other individuals connected to this network were arrested earlier.
The SBU's press service confirmed that all agents were skilled in espionage tactics and had access to state secrets. The criminal activities were overseen by Igor Yegorov, an FSB officer who has been building his network since 2009.
The first to be arrested was SBU Major General Valeriy Shaitano, who planned terrorist attacks in Ukraine under Yegorov's orders. Additionally, the SBU identified another agent, Dmytro Ivantsov, a former security detail for Yanukovych, who assisted in his escape to Russia.
Ivantsov is currently hiding in Crimea and coordinates the activities of other agents. In 2024, the SBU uncovered a National Guard serviceman who was passing information about Ukrainian activists to Ivantsov.
Another agent, who was working at NABU and had been recruited in 2012, continued providing information even after Yanukovych openly sided with the enemy in 2014.
The detained NABU employee faces charges under several articles of the Criminal Code, with a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
The SBU emphasized that this case pertains to a single employee and does not impact the overall effectiveness of NABU as a state institution.
