In Transcarpathia, a couple was sentenced for their cruel treatment of a 10-year-old boy, leading to his death. The child suffered severe burns covering 80% of his body.
The man and the boy's mother were sentenced to nine years in prison, according to the ruling of the Mukachevo District Court.
Law enforcement officials established that on May 13, 2024, the couple, under the influence of alcohol, were on their property.
According to the mother, she began scolding her son for allegedly taking a phone and stealing money without parental consent. The mother claims they "chained him up for 10-15 minutes for disciplinary purposes."
Later, she poured a flammable mixture over the boy. In court, the woman stated she did not recall what liquid she used.
Subsequently, the man ignited the child's clothing, causing severe burns to the boy's face, neck, thighs, arms, back, and buttocks. An expert report confirmed that 80% of the child's body was affected.
The adults did not immediately seek medical help; however, the boy later ended up in the intensive care unit of the regional hospital, where he eventually died.
The boy's mother partially admitted her guilt.
The man and woman were found guilty of committing criminal offenses under:
- Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code – intentional infliction of serious bodily harm, dangerous to life at the time of infliction, committed by a group of individuals, causing the death of the victim;
- Part 1 of Article 135 – knowingly leaving a person in a state dangerous to life without assistance.
The court sentenced them to nine years of imprisonment.
The accused also has another minor child who was taken away after the incident.
Previously, in Ternopil region, a woman was convicted for deliberately puncturing her three-year-old son's eye with a medical needle, resulting in partial blindness for the boy.
