The team from the German publication Welt suffered a tragic drone strike from a Russian "Lancet" on October 13 while filming in the Dnipropetrovsk region. One Ukrainian soldier lost his life as a result of the attack, and another was severely injured.
The crew was preparing a report alongside a mobile unit of the Ukrainian air defense when the drone targeted a military vehicle that was accompanying them. Operator Viktor Lysenko captured the moment of the strike and its immediate aftermath on video.
The strike occurred around 21:35 local time, approximately 30 kilometers from the front line. At the time of the explosion, the crew was only a few meters away from a military team of three personnel.
As a result of the attack, a 48-year-old soldier from the air defense unit was killed, and another soldier sustained injuries so severe that amputation of his leg was necessary.
Welt producer Ivan was injured in both legs by shrapnel and required urgent medical assistance and surgery in the hospital.
Chief reporter Ibrahim Naber and operator Viktor Lysenko sustained minor injuries. All media team members were marked as press representatives during the shooting.
