The forum "Challenges and Solutions for Democracy in Ukraine During Wartime" took place on February 11, 2025, gathering participants to analyze necessary actions to protect democracy in Ukraine during difficult times.
Organizers: The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) in collaboration with the National Interests Protection Network "ANC" and the Civil Network OPORA. Kyiv Post presented key insights from the forum speakers.
Katarina Maternova, EU Ambassador to Ukraine: "This war is ours. It's a conflict for the future of not just Ukraine but also European security. What was once unimaginable is now a reality - using European funds to support your defense industry".
Sean Boyd, Deputy Head of the Canadian Mission in Ukraine: "We are always impressed by the resilience of Ukrainians. During Canada's G7 presidency in 2025, Ukraine will remain a top priority. We stand with you and will continue to do so".
Alex Sobel, Member of Parliament from the UK: "Your fight for democracy is our fight. You are protecting not just your country but democracy across Europe".
Vitaliy Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv: "When the war ends, many soldiers will return home, and they will need jobs. Elections will come, and this may lead to conflicts".
Olena Shulyak, Head of the Servant of the People Party: "Elections cannot take place during the war because soldiers must have the right to vote. We cannot fail them. Such discussions are inappropriate at this stage".
Iryna Herashchenko, Co-Chair of the European Solidarity Faction: "We are entering a difficult period where key principles are being violated. Where is Ukraine in all these plans?".
Serhiy Prytula, Public and Political Activist: "Political parties in Ukraine are distancing from civil society. True unity means no one tries to take all the credit; instead, everyone works together for a common goal".
Yulia "Taira" Paievska, Ukrainian soldier and paramedic: "I see an increasing political struggle for election mandates. But first, let’s defeat the enemy. Only then can we discuss dividing the spoils, agreed?".
"If we don’t defend our land, there won’t be a country to hold elections in".
Olha Aivazovska, Head of the OPORA Civil Network: "Ukraine is in an active phase of war, but the political process is resuming. If we want to maintain global support, we must prepare for the first post-war elections".
Oleksandr Korniienko, First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada: "I don’t see a possibility for elections until martial law ends. The question of when and how to hold elections in Ukraine is of great interest to the world - both our allies and, unfortunately, our enemies".
