On the night of August 20 to 21, the Kyiv region faced a significant test of its aerial defense as drone interceptors shot down nearly 50 Russian drones. This was reported by Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.
"Our interceptors, part of the 'Clean Sky' project, managed to intercept almost 50 enemy drones in one night. I sincerely thank our defenders for their courage in protecting our cities and villages," he wrote.
According to Kalashnyk, the air raid alert lasted over 7 hours, but there were no hits on critical infrastructure or residential buildings. He noted that there were no casualties among the population.
It is important to highlight that the 'Clean Sky' initiative was launched in the spring of 2025 as a response to the challenges posed by mass kamikaze drone attacks. Defenders use interceptors to eliminate dangerous drones before they can harm civilians and infrastructure.
In early May, Kalashnyk announced the formation of new teams and the training of new interceptor operators. He also mentioned that the experience gained in the Kyiv region is already being implemented in other areas.
On August 18, Kalashnyk stated that since the project began, nearly 900 enemy drones have been intercepted.
