Clearing Ukrainian Territories of Explosive Hazards: Recent Updates

An overview of the latest data on the clearance of Ukrainian territories from explosive hazards and the efforts of demining teams.

Since the onset of the large-scale military invasion by the Russian Federation into Ukraine, a total of 586,456 explosive items and 2,966 kg of explosives have been neutralized, including 4,206 aerial bombs, as reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Currently, according to the agency's data, over 181,408 hectares of territory have been surveyed.

The pyrotechnic units have been most active in the following areas: Kharkiv region – 44,859 operations, Kherson – 22,437, Donetsk – 17,370, Kyiv region – 13,742, Mykolaiv – 11,223, Chernihiv – 7,622, Sumy – 6,027.

How many times were deminers called in the last day – what is known

During the last day, the pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service were engaged 183 times, discovering, retrieving, and neutralizing 333 explosive items, and surveying an area of 116.6 hectares.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that the area of land declared safe due to demining efforts has increased by nearly 50% compared to last year.

Ukrainian deminers cleared almost 8,000 hectares of territory in May.

In May, 7,660.21 hectares of agricultural land, 21.27 km of roads, 9.44 km of power lines, 40.24 km of railway tracks, and 5.94 km of pipelines were cleared.

Additionally, 0.88 hectares of residential areas were cleared of explosive hazards.

Throughout 2024, over 35,000 square kilometers have been cleared in Ukraine, allowing for safe economic activities.

This year, Ukraine will receive 26 GCS demining machines as part of a project funded by international partners, including the governments of Germany, Switzerland, Canada, the USA, the UK, Lithuania, and the United24 platform.
