Wikipedia and Artificial Intelligence: New Horizons

Wikipedia integrates artificial intelligence to enhance processes without replacing volunteers.

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia is implementing artificial intelligence, not to replace volunteers, but to streamline technical processes. This is outlined in a new statement from the Wikimedia Foundation detailing the AI strategy.

"The community of volunteers behind Wikipedia is the most valuable element of its success. For nearly 25 years, editors have worked together to create the largest encyclopedia ever produced. Their dedication to reliable knowledge is something that artificial intelligence cannot replace", — the statement reads.

With this approach, Wikipedia plans to leverage artificial intelligence to focus on areas where generative AI can excel. One example is content moderation, which automates routine tasks to maintain the integrity of information. Additionally, AI will be used to enhance information accessibility on the platform, allowing for more time for human discussions and actions.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence will assist editors in sharing local insights by automating the translation and adaptation of common topics. It will also play a role in scaling new volunteer integration through guided mentorship.
