Google is set to completely cease support for ChromeOS by 2034, according to documents from the ongoing legal case involving the U.S. Department of Justice and the company. TechSpot reports this news.
Details regarding the discontinuation of ChromeOS emerged during the antitrust proceedings that determined Google's dominance in the search engine market was illegal. While the company maintains control over the Chrome browser, the future of ChromeOS has sparked separate discussions.
As per the transcripts, Google is obliged to support existing ChromeOS devices for at least until 2033, consistent with its 10-year warranty obligations to users. After that, the operating system will be phased out entirely.
ChromeOS has powered Chromebooks since 2011, initially gaining traction in education and budget markets. In 2025, Google announced its intention to merge Android and ChromeOS into a unified desktop platform.
The new project, internally dubbed Aluminium OS, is currently under active development. This system is expected to serve as an Android variant optimized for desktop use. It will support both Android and ChromeOS applications adapted for larger screens, as well as function on ARM and x86 processors.
The documents also indicate that ChromeOS is built around the Chrome browser and Linux. The Chrome rendering engine will remain a key component in Aluminium OS.
