Ukraine has become the first country in Europe to launch the Starlink Direct to Cell pilot project, enabling Kyivstar subscribers to send SMS via satellite even in the absence of mobile coverage.

This technology allows for communication during prolonged power outages and in remote villages. When the standard signal disappears, the smartphone automatically switches to satellite connectivity.

"The launch of Direct to Cell technology in Ukraine is a significant milestone for the development of communication infrastructure, providing connectivity where traditional networks are unavailable. Despite the ongoing challenges we face, our goal is to ensure reliable communication in any situation," stated Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine.

How does it work?

  • You need an Android smartphone that supports 4G (LTE). Owners of iPhone 13 and newer models will gain access to this feature in the next update.
  • You must be under open sky for the device to catch the satellite signal.
  • The service is provided within your tariff plan without additional charges.

"In our country, where blackouts and infrastructure issues have become commonplace, staying connected is crucial. Every message matters as it can save lives. We are starting with the essentials — SMS exchange, allowing millions to stay in touch under the most challenging conditions," emphasized Oleksandr Komarov, CEO of Kyivstar.

Currently, only SMS functionality is available, enabling users to contact loved ones or emergency services when messengers are inaccessible. In the future, Kyivstar plans to introduce voice calls and mobile internet through Starlink Direct to Cell.

Note: the technology covers the entire territory of Ukraine, except for border areas, occupied territories, and regions of active combat.
