The latest Windows 11 25H2 update (build 26200.7019 and newer) has finally addressed an ongoing issue where the computer would restart instead of shutting down after selecting the "Update and shutdown" option. This has been reported by Windows Latest.
This error, familiar to users of Windows 10 and 11, led to the system restarting after updates were installed, even when the user chose "update and shut down" rather than "update and restart". Microsoft only recently acknowledged the problem and stated that it has been fixed in the optional October update KB5067036.
The company explained that it corrected the "bug that prevented the "Update and shutdown" option from powering off the computer after updates". The primary fix will be included in the November Patch Tuesday update, so users do not need to install the prior patch.
It is believed that the issue arose from a failure in the Servicing Stack – the component responsible for applying system updates. During the "Update and shut down" process, Windows first installs the updates and then enters the "Working on updates" phase, which requires a restart. Due to the error, the system would not complete the shutdown after this phase, loading the login screen instead.
Microsoft did not provide further details, but users have welcomed the fix as a relief after years of frustration, as this issue has plagued Windows since version 10.
