Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, mentioned in a joint interview with Sam Altman that the artificial intelligence industry is facing significant challenges due to energy shortages for the operation of graphics processors. Nadella stated, "The main issue we are facing is not a lack of computing power, but rather electricity – it is crucial to build data centers near energy sources quickly. If this is not done, chips will simply sit idle on shelves".
A similar challenge is observed at NVIDIA, where, after addressing the shortage of AI accelerators, the focus has shifted to energy supply. Major tech companies are investing in various energy sources, including nuclear energy, to support their data centers. These changes have already affected the rising electricity bills for consumers in the United States.
Microsoft has signed an agreement to revive a closed nuclear power plant for $1.6 billion. Other companies are taking similar steps: Meta has signed a deal with XGS Energy for the supply of 150 MW of electricity from geothermal sources and purchases from nuclear plants. AWS announced a $500 million investment in nuclear energy. Google also signed a clean energy supply agreement that includes up to 3 gigawatts of electricity in the U.S. and announced the location of its first nuclear reactor.
