PayPal has announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate its payment services into the ChatGPT platform. Starting next year, users will be able to make purchases directly through the ChatGPT interface, while sellers can offer their products directly on this platform. This information was confirmed by PayPal's CEO Alex Kriss in a statement to CNBC.

According to Kriss, millions of PayPal users will be able to make secure purchases by clicking the 'Buy with PayPal' button in ChatGPT. He described this initiative as a 'new era of shopping,' where artificial intelligence acts as a personal assistant.

The agreement also includes consumer protection measures, such as tracking shipments and resolving disputes. Kriss emphasized that both buyers and sellers undergo verification by the fintech company, which reduces the risk of fraud. Users will be able to pay for their purchases via linked bank accounts, credit cards, or stored balances.

PayPal will also provide technical support for the process, including seller routing and payment verification. This will allow sellers to operate through ChatGPT without the need for separate registration with OpenAI.

PayPal joins the initial partners of OpenAI who are expanding the use of ChatGPT in e-commerce. Previously, OpenAI announced partnerships with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart.

The company has also announced an expansion of the use of OpenAI's corporate products to optimize its internal processes, including speeding up the development of new services.

PayPal aims to become a leading payment platform in the age of AI-driven shopping, as evidenced by its recent partnerships with Google and the AI company Perplexity.

It is worth noting that OpenAI has officially begun its transition to a commercial basis. The non-profit part of the company has been renamed OpenAI Foundation and will now oversee the profit-making structure of OpenAI Group PBC. However, the company's main mission remains unchanged: to ensure that general artificial intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
