Vodafone Group and Vodafone Ukraine have announced the commencement of the construction of the new undersea cable system Kardesa, which will connect Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia. The cable will traverse the Black Sea, becoming a vital part of a digital corridor linking Europe and Asia, circumventing Russian territory. This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
It is noted that the main partner in Europe is the global company Vodafone. Funding for the undersea section of the cable, which will be laid on the seabed of the Black Sea, will be provided by Ukrainian Vodafone in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Transformation.
The ministry emphasized the significance of this project for Ukraine due to:
- Digital sovereignty and security. The cable will significantly enhance the reliability and resilience of Ukraine's telecommunications infrastructure.
- New transit potential. Ukraine will become a key transit link between Europe and Asia.
- Investment and job creation. The project will stimulate the development of infrastructure, attract investments, and create new jobs, especially for engineers, project managers, and IT specialists.
"Kardesa will add an additional 500 Tbps of capacity for the Black Sea region. This is critically important for the growth of traffic related to 5G, AI, and streaming services. The project cost exceeds 100 million euros", the statement reads.
The construction of the first section in Bulgaria is set to begin in 2027. In Ukraine, all work will be conducted exclusively in internationally recognized safe zones, provided that stability and security in the region are maintained.
