On September 29, OpenAI announced the launch of enhanced parental controls for the web and mobile applications of ChatGPT. This decision comes after complaints from parents who alleged that the chatbot provided harmful advice to their teenager. Reuters reports on this development.
The new settings enable parents to activate robust protection by linking their accounts to their child's account. The process involves sending an invitation from one party, which activates control only after the other party confirms it. Parents will be able to restrict access to sensitive content and manage whether ChatGPT retains previous conversations.
Additionally, they can set "quiet hours" to block access during specific times, disable voice mode, and functionalities for generating and editing images. However, parents will not have access to their teen's chat history. In exceptional cases where systems or moderators detect serious threats to a child's life or health, parents may receive notifications with the minimum necessary information to ensure the child's safety.
