OpenAI has unveiled the innovative ChatGPT Agent — a virtual assistant capable of autonomously managing a computer and executing a variety of tasks. This feature is currently available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team users, with a rollout for business accounts expected by the end of summer.
Unlike conventional chatbots, the Agent can interact with calendars, create presentations, analyze documents, make online purchases, schedule meetings, and handle everyday tasks such as restaurant reservations. It operates within a virtual environment equipped with a browser, terminal, file system, and other tools, allowing it to autonomously process requests.
The feature is built on a new model that can interact with multiple tools simultaneously. The development team has combined efforts from the Deep Research and Operator projects; however, unlike the latter, the Agent does not simply consult or assist in decision-making — it performs actions independently within the virtual environment. Operator, in contrast, requires human involvement in task execution.
ChatGPT Agent can:
- Analyze calendars and plan events;
- Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations;
- Work with user files;
- Perform searches and reservations through third-party services;
- Generate reports and process web data.
Before executing irreversible actions, such as sending emails or placing orders, the tool requires confirmation. Some functionalities, including transactions, are temporarily restricted, and certain websites open in Watch Mode.
The feature is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area and Switzerland. OpenAI has not announced specific timelines for its launch in these regions.
The introduction of this new tool comes amid growing competition in the AI agent space. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, and startups like Klarna are already implementing similar solutions. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Agent represents a significant step towards an AI model that not only advises but also performs real work.
