As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches, Microsoft is making efforts to cater to users who are reluctant to upgrade by providing various incentives. This time, the company is introducing the option to purchase security updates, known as Extended Security Updates (ESU), for 1000 Microsoft Rewards points.
Support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, yet this version of the operating system remains the most popular among all Microsoft OSs according to StatCounter, accounting for 53.19%. Meanwhile, the latest version, Windows 11, holds 43.22%. Thus, over half of users can take advantage of this opportunity for free.
With 1000 Microsoft Rewards points, users can access additional security updates, critical vulnerability fixes, and other issues for an extended year, until October 13, 2026.
If you do not have 1000 Microsoft points, earning them is not too difficult. You can do this by using Bing search, particularly through the Microsoft Edge browser, shopping at the Microsoft Store, launching games via the Xbox app, and generally engaging actively with the company’s services.
Alternatively, users can purchase a year of ESU updates for $30. After the support for Windows 10 ends, users will have the option to choose one of the available options, at which point their PC will be automatically registered for ESU.
Organizations can also obtain ESU for $61 per device to receive critical and important updates on a monthly basis for one year. The subscription can be renewed annually for up to three years, but the cost will increase each time.
