The founder of the popular language learning platform Duolingo, Luis von Ahn, believes that artificial intelligence can significantly enhance educational processes. In the near future, AI will become a primary tool in schools, shifting teachers' roles to become more like mentors than traditional instructors.
Duolingo has been actively integrating AI into its offerings. Recently, the company announced it would cease collaboration with human creators for educational materials, replacing them with AI technologies. Von Ahn notes that over 116 million users engage with the app each month, enabling thousands of A/B tests to refine the learning experience.
He asserts that schools will remain as centers for children, but the main educational work will be conducted through AI. Artificial intelligence can provide more accurate assessments of student skills and better tailor tasks compared to a teacher managing a classroom of many students.
Interestingly, some educational institutions are already implementing AI. For instance, at Alpha School in the US, students learn for two hours a day using AI, while teachers provide only emotional and motivational support. The school has four branches and plans to open eight more, with tuition fees ranging from $40,000 to $65,000 per year.
According to von Ahn, changes in education will not happen overnight: "Just like the government, education evolves slowly."
