The exit of Kyiv's Dynamo from the qualification of the Champions League 2025/26 season marks a significant moment, concluding a long-standing presence of Ukrainian clubs in European competitions.

On August 12, the team failed to overcome the challenge posed by Paphos in the third qualifying round. Under the leadership of Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, Dynamo suffered its second defeat (0:2) and was eliminated from the Champions League.

As the only Ukrainian representative in the Champions League, this result ended a 20-year streak of Ukrainian clubs' participation.

For the first time since the 2005/06 season, there will be no Ukrainian team in the group stage of the premier European tournament. Back then, Dynamo and Shakhtar were unable to advance past Switzerland’s Thun and Italy’s Inter, respectively.

However, it is important to note that Dynamo's European campaign is not over yet. The team will move to the Europa League, where they will face the winner of the match between Hamrun Spartans (Malta) and Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) in the playoff round.

At this stage, Shakhtar may join Dynamo. Arda Turan's team will play against Turkish Samsunspor if they can overcome Greek Panathinaikos in the third qualifying round. The first match ended in a goalless draw, with the return match scheduled for Thursday, August 14, at 21:00 Kyiv time.
