To celebrate the anniversary of the Avant-Garde Museum branch, the Museum of the History of Kyiv, along with the newly established branch, launched two fresh exhibition projects during the Avant-Garde Kyiv Fest 2025. The exhibitions are titled «Avant-Garde. ARMU. History» and «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» and are displayed in the historic building at 16 Lypinska Street.
The branch was officially established in November 2024 as the tenth branch of the Museum of the History of Kyiv. In May 2025, the Kyiv City Council approved the decision to allocate space in the historical building on Lypinska Street, which is an architectural landmark.
«Today, we witness the realization of a significant idea that was actively supported by the previous director of the Museum of the History of Kyiv, Diana Popova. Despite the challenges of wartime, a new museum – the Avant-Garde Museum – has opened in Kyiv. This has been made possible through the collaboration of artists, collectors, scholars, cultural figures, city authorities, and partners. Over the past year, we have moved from the decision to establish the Avant-Garde Museum to welcoming the first visitors. Our collection now boasts nearly 300 works from various avant-garde movements. Residents of Kyiv and visitors can now explore two important art projects dedicated to the struggle for self-identity,» noted the director of the Museum of the History of Kyiv, Victoria Mukha.
She emphasized that the exhibitions «Avant-Garde. ARMU. History» and «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» showcase the most prominent names in Ukrainian avant-garde under one roof, while the museum team continues to investigate the continuity of avant-garde ideas and defend cultural heritage from hybrid threats.
«The extraordinary importance of these initiatives is evident today. Our mission is to actively reintegrate the names of Ukrainian avant-gardists into the modern cultural space. We strive to open pathways to high art for everyone. At the same time, it is essential for us to present the results of our work on the museum's collection to the community and patrons, made possible through our shared commitment to preserving our cultural heritage,» emphasized the director of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City State Administration, Serhiy Anzhiyak.
In the exhibition «Avant-Garde. ARMU. History», works by artists such as Mykola Hlushchenko, Maria Kotlyarevska, Oksana Pavlenko, Vasyl Sedlyar, and others are presented. The «Avant-Garde. Cultural League» project showcases the legacy of a Jewish cultural and educational organization that operated in Ukraine from 1918 to 1924, including Ukrainian avant-gardists of Jewish descent. Featured artists include Marc Chagall, Mane Katz, David Sterenberg, and others. The project is realized in partnership with the Embassy of Israel in Ukraine and other partners.
The exhibition can be visited according to the museum's working hours: Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 19:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Venue: Avant-Garde Museum, Kyiv, 16 Lypinska St., 1st floor.
