In the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, a court has ruled against a driver who, while intoxicated, struck a 14-year-old girl at a pedestrian crossing and left her without assistance.
The 33-year-old man was sentenced to 4 years in prison and banned from driving for 5 years.
This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.
The incident occurred on November 18, 2024, on Dashkevich Street when the driver of a Seat Toledo hit the girl who was crossing the street on a green light.
After the incident, the man fled the scene, leaving the injured child behind. Witnesses called the police and an ambulance.
As a result of the accident, the girl sustained moderate injuries and was hospitalized at the "Okhmatdyt" hospital.
As commented by prosecutor's spokesperson Irina Vinokurova, the police found and arrested the driver a few hours later. He was living nearby, and a breathalyzer test showed 2.3 promille of alcohol in his system.
"Since the suspect had previously been held criminally liable for intentional bodily harm, prosecutors requested his detention," she noted.
In court, the man admitted his guilt but did not compensate the injured child for her damages.
For the totality of crimes, he was found guilty and sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment with a 5-year driving ban. This is the strictest punishment provided for by the articles he was charged with (part 1 of article 286-1, part 1 of article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Earlier, it was reported that in a pedestrian zone in Kyiv, a vehicle had struck four people, including some injured.
