President Volodymyr Zelensky reached out to Mark Carney, the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada, to congratulate him on his surprising electoral victory. They discussed the critical importance of sanctions against Russia, air defense for Ukraine, and collaboration within the G7, which is currently chaired by Canada.

“I just spoke with Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, whose party won the election. I congratulated him on this victory and am confident that our relations with Canada will remain strong. Canada is currently leading the G7. We discussed our cooperation at this platform, and I appreciate Canada’s willingness to work with us,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing the significance of Canada’s support.

Zelensky also invited Carney to visit Ukraine and expressed hope for Canada’s continued leadership in upholding international law.

“We spoke with the Prime Minister about sanctions against Russia and agreed that strong sanctions for the war against the aggressor are still necessary. We also discussed air defense for Ukraine and diplomacy with key partners,” the President added.

Just a couple of months ago, many expected Carney's Liberal Party to suffer a crushing defeat by Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party, as Canadian voters expressed frustration with former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

However, the aggressive trade war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump against Canada shifted the political landscape dramatically. In a hockey analogy, the left-leaning anti-Trump coalition made a comeback and achieved a historic victory in the final moments of the third period. On Tuesday, Poilievre lost his seat in Parliament.
