Ukraine and Syria Reestablish Diplomatic Relations

Ukraine and Syria have signed a communiqué to restore diplomatic ties. President Zelensky expressed readiness to support the Syrian people.

On Wednesday, September 24, Ukraine and Syria signed a joint communiqué to restore diplomatic relations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky termed this a “significant step” and declared his willingness to support the Syrian people towards stability. He shared this update on Telegram.
Zelensky announced the reestablishment of diplomatic ties with Syria.
“Today Ukraine and Syria signed a joint communiqué to restore diplomatic relations. We are pleased with this important step and are ready to assist the Syrian people on their path to stability,” − wrote Zelensky.
The signing occurred following discussions between the Ukrainian president and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. During their meeting, the parties addressed potential sectors for cooperation, along with common security threats faced by both nations and the importance of countering them.
“We agreed to build relationships based on mutual respect and trust,” − highlighted the Ukrainian president following the talks.

Syria has signed an $800 million agreement with a UAE company for the Tartus port. During the summer, Syrian authorities entered into an agreement with a company from the United Arab Emirates regarding an investment of 800 million dollars for the modernization of Tartus port. The General Directorate of Land and Maritime Ports of Syria signed the deal on July 13 with DP World from the UAE. The agreement with DP World, a subsidiary of Dubai World, involves the development of a multipurpose terminal in Tartus on the Syrian Mediterranean coast.
On January 6, it was reported that the last Russian submarines had left the Mediterranean Sea following setbacks in Syria.
